The village of Trompsburg was named after Jan and Bastiaan Tromp, owners of the farm Middelfontein, on which the town was founded in 1891. The main economic activity of the region is merino sheep farming. Trompsburg is home to South Africa’s largest privately owned fishery and second largest shearing barn.
