Until production ceased in 1929, Okiep was the richest copper mine in the world. Various relics from this period can still be seen in town. Okiep is situated 10 km north of Springbok.

HISTORICAL VIEW

Cornish Beam Pump

Situated in the centre of Okiep about 100 m west of the main road. The steam driven pump was erected by Cornish miners in 1882 to pump water from the mine and was in use until 1929. It was restored in 1965. As the boilers could not be restored, no steam is now available to drive it. The pump can only be seen from the road as access to the area is restricted. Both the pump and smoke stack were declared national monuments.

Old Cemetery

Immediately to the north of the village. There are graves here dating back to the 19^th century and the Anglo Boer War. It is easily eccessible.

Orbicule Koppie

Due west of the town with the best examples of orbicular diorite in the country

Smoke Stack

Adjacent to the Cornish beam pump in the centre of Okiep. Erected in 1880 by the Cape Copper Company to fire the boilers that supplied steam for the pump. It was in use until 1929. In 1952 the smoke stack was declared a monument in remembrance of the pioneer miners of Namaqualand. The smoke stack is easily accessible as it is situated next to the Okiep Hotel
