Halkett Country House is a romantic bushveld retreat offering you an excellent opportunity to unwind in a privately booked, fully-catered destination. With good food and good times, we especially suit small groups travelling together.  Located just 2 ½ hours drive North of Pretoria in the malaria-free Limpopo Province, South Africa, we are especially well-suited to take only 1 reservation at a time, providing you with an exclusive holiday destination.  Yours to enjoy alone, when you book into Halkett Country House you embrace the opportunity to relax and be yourselves.  The Jackson Family home has been in the family since 1902.   

Unpretentious and down to earth, Halkett Country House is fully-catered, offering secluded bushveld breaks allowing you to relax.  Suitable for families with children and couples alike, we are also pet-friendly.  With no strict regime and no enforced early rising, your days are yours to plan.  This original white-washed, brick farmhouse, built in 1902 has a tin roof and verandahs on which to take tea and cake.  We maintain an air of romance from a bygone era under the shade of leafy trees.   Restoring your soul and rejuvenating your interest in all things bushveld, after a day of hiking or simply snoozing, take time star gazing under an unpolluted bushveld sky.   Go hiking on the farm, horse-riding or relax by the pool.  Read a book, sip champagne, take a bubble bath…... perfect for time-out.  We provide a subtle service, attention to detail and are genuinely pleased to share this wonderful place with you.  In summer time the ever-present resonance of toads and frogs chorus, whilst the fiery-necked nightjar trills.  Bird-watching is effortless with a number of species viewed close to the house – you need not leave the verandah to enjoy our birds.A retreat to Halkett Country House is a fantastic opportunity to reinstate a feeling of calm to heart and mind. 

Our aim is to make your stay memorable.  You’ll soon be thinking, “it’s like…… coming home”.  We accommodate 2-8 adults comfortably, with 4 main bedrooms.  There are 2 master suites (King & Queen), 1 rustic rondavel and 1 front bedroom made up as twin or double to choose from.  You are guaranteed comfort and a taste of luxury.  All beds are dressed in 100% white cotton linen with comfortable cushions to relax in. The house is built for the climate keeping cool in summer and warm in winter.  

The King Suite:  The master bedroom situated in the main house features a king size bed with romantic mosquito netting.  A haven for bathroom lovers, this suite features en-suite bathroom, ball and claw bath tub, indoor shower and an outside courtyard shower.    

The Queen Suite:  To the side of the main house this is the room with a view!  From your queen sized bed with mosquito drapes you can gaze across the lawn and into the bush beyond.  A lounge / dressing room can be converted to transform this room into a family room for parents with young children. The bathroom features a luxury shower and ball and claw bath tub.   

The Front Room: Set at the front of the house this room is simply decorated and suited for singles or couples.  The room is ideal for children to stay close but separate from Mum & Dad in the King Suite.  Adjacent is a small reading room, a private area for the occupant of this room.  

The Rondavel:  Rustic, thatched and built of solid stone, the room is classically decorated with mahogany furniture.  Simple and romantic with mosquito netting over the king size bed, the rondavel has long been a favourite with visitors for it’s unique qualities.  Perfect for little princesses and honeymooners alike.  The bathroom is to the side, featuring a luxury shower in an unusual rustic bathroom.

Make the most of lazy days, relaxing by the salt water pool hearing birdsong, watching the blue sky above and feeling a welcome breeze coming through the trees.    Indulge in a refreshing cup of tea and some fancy cakes.  We will spoil you with home-made sweet treats, giving you just one more reason to sit back and relax.  Throughout the big sitting room and small sitting room you will find assorted reading material we hope you will peruse.  Modern fiction sits alongside older classics.  Play time is easy – this is your holiday and children may run freely.  Lawns facilitate many outdoor games.  We keep a selection of board games available and will engage children and adults alike in the traditionally played games of the house such as “Hunt the Thimble”. You can enjoy a game of tennis on a full-size termite-mound based bush tennis court - with the extra challenge of being in the bush!  Leisurely horse rides are offered to all visitors.  If you have never been near horses, here is an opportunity! We will conduct bush walks to share our knowledge of the environment with you.  Nearly 400 hectares of unspoiled bushveld allow us the opportunity to look for tracks of caracal, leopard, porcupine, baboon, aardvark and brown hyena, amongst more.  Open every night for drinks before dinner, step back in time into the Big Sitting Room and absorb the atmosphere in this unchanged room, the heart of the household.

Meals at Halkett

We pride ourselves on our flexibility and aim to cater for all tastes.   Every visitor is presented a meal in the formal dining room with old-fashioned charm and traditionally laid table.  Silver candlesticks add a timeless elegance to this dining experience.  Formal or smart-casual attire is preferred for this meal – an opportunity to dress up.    Summer nights make the most of alfresco candlelit suppers by the pool and star gazing under the unpolluted bushveld sky.  Listen for haunting night sounds of jackals and bushbabies. Organically home grown vegetables accompany most of our plates.  All breads, cakes & pastries are our own.   We provide balanced dishes with a decadent edge.   You tell us if you would prefer breakfast and lunch or brunch.  An afternoon tea is offered between 3pm and 4pm and the main evening meal thereafter. Summer is perfect for picnics, home made ice cream and dining by the pool.  During winter, let us arouse your senses with the scent of mulled wine and a hearty roast dinner cooked in the aga. To make your stay even more special, by request, we can organize a tea party for the children or a birthday cake.  If you would like to enjoy a bush braai we will oblige.  Please note unusual requests require consultation prior to visits.  Please note that Halkett is not available for use in any self-catering means but we can provide any meal provided it is requested on booking!
