96 Winery Road Restaurant

Great, friendly service, wonderful food, the original home of "dry aged" beef and now... The ONLY South African Restaurant to be listed in the Wine Spectator Wine List Awards!!! We are loving it!!

Situated in the heart of the Helderberg Winelands, this colour bright, rustic restaurant offers breathtaking views of both the Helderberg and Table Mountain. The restaurant offers a relaxing atmosphere, whether it is on the terrace in summer or beside the fire in winter.

Menus, enlivened with South African touches, have a sense of fun and adventure, with changes dictated by the seasons. Only the freshest often organic and where possible local ingredients are used to prepare the dishes. The extensive, well-chosen and informatively annotated wine list is amusingly parochial, highlighting the Helderberg region before moving on to “the rest of the world”, showing the quality, dedication, and in fact, the diversity of the South African wine industry. The walk in the cellar is a browser’s delight, the home to a selection of rare and vintage wines.

Azarel Unique Touch Spa

Azarel is situated within the grounds of the farm. It has become an established venue with many local residents choosing to escape from the pressures of everyday life and enjoy the de-stressing effect of one of the range of massages.

The ambiance is one of calm and relaxation allowing clients to take on board the natural surroundings and attune with nature. With the modern, hectic lifestyle that most of us have come to accept as the norm, both body and mind need an opportunity to slow down and recuperate if this approach to life is not going to take its toll on our health.

Even the striving for a perfect image can add to the strain and tension which is totally contrary to the cheerful, relaxed, happy image that many of us want to portray. At Azarel, all the staff understand the need for the body to relax and being pampered is one way this can be done.

All staff have specialist skills so that a wide range of treatments can be offered. For those living nearby, regular visits can have a long term effect, for those only visiting it is an opportunity not to be missed. For many, the first few days of a holiday are spent unwinding, at Azarel, this process can be speeded up so that more days can be left free to enjoy the location and its surrounding area thereby getting the most from your break.

For those looking to include a spa break as part of their holiday, Azarel offers the perfect solution. With a wide variety of treatments, tranquil surroundings and luxiourious accommodation you will return to the world refreshed and reinvigorated.

Zandberg - Wines of Heritage

Zandberg Estate produces wines of heritage and great distinction. The people behind the wines are highly qualified and passionate. They have a deep respect for traditional methods but also partner modern technology where deemed appropriate to allow excellence in their craft and the finished product. The terroir is the main factor in any winery’s production and fortunately for Zandberg falls in the Helderberg ward – an area synonymous with slow complex development of fruit and magnificent reds.

Winemakers:

Anton Bredell is the head winemaker and is the 6th of seven generations of wine making tradition. He still proudly makes the wine in a cellar built by his grandfather in 1925. He is assisted by his father, Pieter (senior) and his recently qualified son, Pieter (junior). They collectively make 3 out of seven generations of the Bredell winemaking clan who are notorius for winning the Jan Smuts Trophy no less than 3 times.

Viticulture:

Basil Moss, known as the “Brit who once caused a scandal” (Wynboer), takes care of the vineyard. You may say that you have never heard of him but you have surely “tasted the fruits of his labour” (Wynboer). Basil has more than 40 years experience in viticulture and was the first English farmer to win the Jan Smuts Trophy.

Terroir:

Zandberg is situated in the Helderberg ward, close to False Bay. The sea breezes cool the vineyards in the afternoons allowing slow complex development of fruit. Combine this with well drained soils and one realizes why this area is recognized as one of the best red grape growing areas in the Southern Hemisphere.

Wines available:

Zandberg produces multi award winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A Dry Rose and ground breaking White Merlot are on the table for 2009.

Fermentation:

The wines are open tank fermented in traditional cement tanks to allow the harsh volatile acids to evaporate. This allows for unsurpassable velvety smoothness. The wine has four days of skin contact while being manually punched down, giving the wine a deep red colour and extracting rich fruit flavours.

Maturation:

The wine is matured in French oak barriques for 24 months consisting of 15% new oak. Zandberg has and continues to win a multitude of national and international awards such as Gold at the prestigious Concours Mondial de Bruxelles two years consecutively for their outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. Zandberg will endeavour to produce “wines of heritage and great distinction”
