Kogelberg Nature Reserve, Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve are rated as some of the finest locations in the Cape for viewing the fynbos. Various birding packages are on offer, depending in your specific interests. Some of the fascinating wildlife packages awaiting you include safari game drives, equestrian safaris, low impact quad bike safaris, a touch and play experience with lion cubs, and a visit to a penguin colony to see the endangered Jackass penguin. Kogelberg Nature Reserve The heart of the fynbos kingdom with 1650 plant species, 77 of which occur nowhere else, this is rightly regarded as one of the world’s hotspots of botanical diversity. The nature reserve also offers one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world, winding through the quaint hamlets of Rooiels, Hangklip and Pringle Bay. Situated 40 kilometres from Cape Town, the reserve spans 100 000 hectares, an area approximately the size of the Cape Peninsula. It includes marine as well as terrestrial ecosystems and stretches from below sea level to the mountain tops, the highest peak standing at 1265 metres. Harold Porter Botanical Gardens A beautiful, secluded garden set between mountain and sea in the heart of the Cape fynbos. Irises, daisies and orchids abound. Glimpse the Disa uniflora and king Protea in their natural habitat; revel in the abundance of waterfalls and amber pools, approximately 88 species of birds, mongoose, porcupines and the shy genets. Mountain slopes with wind-clipped heath lands, deep gorges with relict forests, flats and marshes with restios, sedges and bulbs; and coastal dunes with their specialised salt-adapted plants.
Fernkloof Nature Reserve A diverse and magnificent variety of unspoilt coastal mountain fynbos. Hiking trails offer spectacular panoramic views of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Walker Bay. The fame of the course has in recent years spread internationally, with the Nelson Mandela Invitational having been held at the Arabella Golf Course over several years. This pro-celebrity tournament hosted by Gary Player hosted the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Samuel L Jackson, Ronan Keating, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Tim Clark, Lee Westwood and Sam Torrance.
