The outside of the Graskop Hotel is pretty unassuming - but walk inside and you'll be greeted by the biggest private collection of contemporary African art in the entire country. Beaded chairs from Nigeria, pygmy beds from Cameroon, sculptures from Ivory Coast, body masks from Tanzania, carvings from Zimbabwe, baskets from South Africa.

Owners Harrie Siertsema, Willem van Bergen, Elva van der Meulen and Ellen Stroud have turned the Graskop Hotel into one of the funkiest spots in Mpumalanga - the hotel itself is a marvellous mixture of Seventies, Art Deco and contemporary African styles - and the place has become very popular with European travellers, particularly the French. It isn't hard to see why.

Attractions

Graskop, situated in Mpumalanga on the Drakensberg Escarpment, not only offers the visitor spectacular scenery and breathtaking views - from here the scenic Panorama Route leads northwards along the edge of the escarpment to the Blyde River Canyon. The historic town of Pilgrim's Rest is just a short hop away.

Graskop is also a gateway to the world-famous Kruger Park and its unique wildlife - the town is in the only malaria-free zone situated within easy driving distance from the Kruger Park.

Graskop Hotel is a unique artistic experience offering friendly accommodation, contemporary South African art in a variety of interesting settings and culinary delights to be remembered.

The Graskop Hotel is centrally situated on the Mpumalanga Escarpment at the start of the Panorama Route. On our doorstep you have the famous Pinnacle Rock, God's Window and the historical town of Pilgrim's Rest. Graskop is surrounded by beautiful waterfalls, streams, tree ferns and hiking trails.

The Panorama route is a circular drive with several detours - it starts at Graskop going northwards past The Pinnacle and Driekop Gorge, Lisbon Falls and God's Window. The route leads through dense plantations to Vaalhoek, from here the traveller can go north to Bourke's Luck in the Blyde River, or turn south along the Pilgrim's Creek valley to the peaceful town of Pilgrim's Rest. During the 1870's this town was anything but peaceful, being the centre of the gold rush in the then Eastern Transvaal. From Pilgrim's Rest it is a short drive over the mountain-divide back to Graskop.

The Blyde River has a spectacular course. Near the site of a once profitable goldmine known as Bourke's Luck, are the extraordinary Bourke's Potholes and colourful rock formations. There are paths and footbridges taking the visitor to viewing sites.

The river then plunges into a gigantic gorge some 800 metres below the summit of the escarpment. Dominating the gorge are the triplet peaks known as the Three Rondawels and the huge flat-topped summit of Mariepskop. The Blyde River is dammed at the lower end of the gorge where there is a public resort.

South of Graskop just off the road to Sabie is the spectacular Mac-Mac Falls, further downstream is a popular swimming site known as the Mac-Mac Pools.

Facilities

Accommodation Facilities

All rooms offer the following:
• En-suite bathroom, shower, or both
• Down duvets
• Tea- / Coffee-making facilities
• Fans
• Television - SABC2, SABC3, e-tv, mnet, mm1, mm2 & mnet sports channels.

FACILITIES

There's a pool, outdoor verandas, a coffee shop, a seriously trendy bar (think Cognacs and intercontinental chatter) and an Internet Café in the courtyard.

Some of the hotel's collection is for sale - but it's a short amble round the corner to the adjoining Delagoa Arts & Crafts centre (owned by Harrie and Willem), which has everything you could ever want on the arts and crafts front, be it a wooden giraffe, a wire lampshade or a snake-lines walking stick. The shop is huge; one foreign guide book called it 'the best selection, best quality and best value for money' art and crafts centre in the country; and you should probably save going there till last (there's plenty to do in and around Graskop, from pancakes to hang-gliding) because you'll never want to leave.
