Thundering Zulu”, the direct translation of DumaZulu, is an appropriate label for a place so rich in African culture. Situated in the heart of Zululand, near Hluhluwe, DumaZulu offers an authentic African cultural experience starting with the themes of the individual units.  

Each free-standing unit is designed to resemble different tribes of Africa and has decor which adds rich colours of the earth to the interior, hues of burnt orange, rich reds and browns add to the tasteful ethnic feel with en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, telephones and tea/coffee making facilities.

The Lodge offers 20 units of which 10 are self catering, with a kitchenette neatly built within the unit allowing guests to choose between home cooked meals or dining at the lodge restaurant. A swimming pool is also available on the property.

DumaZulu Lodge & Traditional Village holds a 3-star rating by the Tourism Grading Council.

Facilities

The lodge consists of twenty three units sleeping 2 - 4 persons each. The exterior of each "hut" resembles the different tribal peoples of Southern Africa, including Zulu, Swazi, North Sotho, Xhosa, Venda, Tsonga, and Ndebele, and the interior is decorated in ethnic fabrics and tribal memorabilia. Facilities include private en-suite bathrooms with showers, air-conditioning, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities. In addition guests can enjoy the visit to the ethnic tribal village and enjoy cultural shows three times per day. Al fresco dining and bar in spectacular forest setting. A thatch-roofed lapa seating up to seating up to 120 people ideal for conferences and events.

An added attraction is the snake and crocodile park which consists of many indigenous and exotic reptiles.

Guests can also take time to relax around the swimming pool, enjoying the tranquil environment of the African bush.

Game drives into the many surrounding Game Reserves and tours to nearby tourists attractions can also be arranged.

Directions

Directions from Johannesburg: • Travel from Johannesburg to Ermelo. • Follow the N2 South from Ermelo. • Travel past Piet Retief, Pongola and Mkuze towards Hlluhluwe. • ±10km after the Hluhluwe turnoff on the N2 you will see a brown sign indicating a turn off to Bushlands/DumaZulu. • Take the turn off and turn left. Follow this road and you will pass the Dumazulu Kraal entrance on your left hand side. • Visitors to the Cultural Experience will park in this car park. • Continue on dirt road to the T junction and turn left, the DumaZulu Lodge entrance will be on your left approximately 500 meters from the junction. • The journey takes approximately 6 hours. Directions from Durban: • Follow the N2 North from Durban. • Travel past Stanger, Gingindlovu, Richards Bay and Kwambonambi. • ±40km after Mtubatuba you will see a sign indicating a turn off to Bushlands/DumaZulu. • Take the turn off and turn right over N2 freeway. Follow this road and you will pass the DumaZulu Kraal entrance on your left hand side. • Visitors to the Cultural Experience will park in this car park. • Continue on dirt road to the T junction and turn left, the DumaZulu Lodge entrance will be on your left approximately 500 meters from the junction.
