There’s nothing quite like a backpackers hostel run by seasoned backpackers. Hayley and Braam have travelled over 40 000 km between them - backpacking all the way!

Hayley and Braam have made sure that everything you need is right there - a great pool and garden, fantastic and inexpensive meals, TV, Internet access, comfortable beds; AND they’ll organise your adventures - whether it’s a trip to the beach, diving with great white sharks, sailing  trips, sandboarding, or kayaking alongside the whales.

All you have to do is get here - they’ll sort that out for you too if you like!

Hayley and Braam arrived in Hermanus 8 years ago for the weekend - and stayed. They decided that Hermanus, offering the best landbased whale watching in the world, needed a space for backpackers. Hermanus Backpackers was born!

They still put on their rucksacks and travel at least once a year. So watch out for them on your travels or come to Hermanus Backpackers and you’ll find them having fun making sure backpacker visitors have a good time too!

Barry, Tertius and Lela manage the Hermanus Backpackers. Willing, able.. AND wonderful… they’ll transport you to and from the Baz Bus or the beach; take you sandboarding or surfing; point you to the best spots for coffee or whale watching, make sure the bar is stocked, the pool clean, your linen fresh…. they’re cool, friendly and FUN!

Attractions

  Great White Shark Cage Diving & Surface Viewing

An excellent adventure! Go play ‘bait’ with the famous Great White Sharks of Dyer Island. Breakfast/lunch and all diving equipment included, 98% sighting. Free trips are at the discretion of the skipper in case of rare no sightings.

Boat Whale Watching

Two hours out in the stunningly beautiful, Walker Bay. Check out the Southern Right Whales from their specialised whale watching boat.

Sea Kayaking in Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary

1.5hrs on the water, delicious snacks and coffee included. Awesome scenery, maybe a few dolphins if you’re lucky and July to December avoid paddling into whales!!

Cape Aghulhas Tour – Min 2 persons

Visit the most southern tip of the African continent at Cape Aghulhas, 34 degrees South.  Explore the pretty Overberg farmlands, the lighthouse (climb to the top!), the southern tip, old fishermans cottages, the longest white sandy beach in the Southern Hemisphere, a fabulous candle factory & the famous shipwreck museum.

Regularly seen are the rare Blue Cranes (South Africa’s national bird), eagles, ostrich and occasionally, wild antelope.

Horse Riding

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, Horse Trail Safari’s has it all.

Take a ride on the beach and see some of the Overbergs most stunning scenery.

Local Wine Tour with Lela - she knows about this stuff!!! (min. 2 persons)

A fully guided Wine Tour of our incredibly pretty Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven & Earth) Valley will introduce you to 5 wine farms and over 40 delicious wines.  Learn how the vines and grapes are cultivated, a cellar tour to see how wine is made, the history of wine, how corks and oak barrels are used and how climatic conditions affect the wine industry. 2 fabulous restaurants or a classy packed lunch can be organised – not included.  A visit to The Wine Village at the end of your tour is essential, you can taste more wine there and they also stock over 1,600 wines of South Africa.

Tandem Paragliding

(weather and availability permitting!) If you can afford it, it’s one of the things you’ll remember when you’re old! Totally amazing, breathtaking, fun, easy and very safe. No experience necessary. R850 per person

A 2hr walk around Zwelihle with Willy, a local township elder, an real insight of the ‘other’ South Africa. Pay Willy at his home.
