The town was officially founded by Dirk Jacobus Winterbach in June 1963 and named after his grandfather, President Schalk Willem Burger. The area is well known for it’s wild flowers and the Aloe burgersfortensis Reynolds is endemic to Burgersfort. During autumn the Magaba tree or Bergsering makes a spectacular display.
