Tzaneen is in a fertile region with tropical and subtropical agriculture taking place in a 20,000 km² region. There are different theories to were the name comes from and range from the Sotho words tsaneng (gathering place) to tsana (basket of hills). Tzaneens subtropical conditions provides more suited weather for dense forests (high summer rainfall) than the thorny bushveld above the escarpment. Summer months September - March have an average temperature of 28 C and winter months around 15C. Tzaneen has the largest mall north of Pretoria. Tzaneen is populated mostly by afrikaans speaking whites, tsonga and northern sotho.
